Q: In original versions of MYST, when I grabbed
something, the cursor changed, displaying a hand graphic holding the
object I had just grabbed. How do I know I have grabbed something in
realMyst?
A: When you grab an item in realMyst, your cursor does not change, but
a transparent icon, representing the item you are holding, appears at
the bottom left of the screen. The icon will disappear, as does the
cursor, whenever you click and hold the left or right mouse button.

A: It sounds as though you are launching the game from the CD. It will run but you will not be able to save properly resulting in a crash. To make sure you are launching the game from the correct hard drive installation location, try this:
Do not insert the game disc to start the game.
Click on the realMYST icon located on the hard drive.
After you have clicked on the correct game icon, you will be prompt to insert the game disc. Insert the CD and continue the launch process.
You should now no longer have problems saving the game.

I try to launch realMYST, I get one of the following error messages:
"Error Initializing sound" "The application "RealMyst"
has unexpectedly quit".

the application named "Memory" from inside the control panels

Q: When I try to launch realMYST, I get an
error message that says "The application "realMYST" could
not be opened because "CarbonLib" could not be found."
A: CarbonLib is an extension that RealMyst requires in order to run
properly. This extension is bundled in a package of sprocket extensions
called Gamesprockets which can be downloaded freely from a number of
websites such as www.macupdate.com.
Just download the file and run the installer contained within. You will
be asked to restart your computer after the installation is complete.

Q: I have a Dual-Processor machine and whenever
I try to launch RealMyst in OS 10.x.x, the application "Unexpectedly
Quits" before I can even get to the game.
A: This is a problem we are following with the dual processor machines.
For the time being, use the following instructions to turn off the 2nd
processor. Please note that following instructions is an UNSUPPORTED
WORK-AROUND. It is NOT recommended that anyone other than experienced
users attempt to disable the processor.
- Go to your Applications folder and open the file named Utilities. In Utilities you will see an application named Terminal. Terminal is the gateway into
the world of Unix (Darwin specifically) through Mac OS X. Double-click on the Terminal application to launch it.
- Once inside Terminal, you will see something that closely resembles this:
Welcome to Darwin!
[johndoe's-Computer:~] johndoe%_
- The underscore symbol (_) shown at the prompt denotes where your cursor is. When you are at this point, type the following text:
sudo nvram boot-args="cpus=1"
You must type the above line exaclty as it appears. You may copy and paste this command from here into the terminal application if you wish. Press return
after you have entered the command. You will be prompted for a password at this point. So far, your screen should look like this:
Welcome to Darwin!
[johndoe's-Computer:~] johndoe% sudo nvram boot-args="cpus=1"
Password:_
- Type in the administrator's password that you created when you installed OS 10.x.x. When you have entered the password, press return. Note that as you are
typing, the cursor will not advance and you will not be able to see your password as you enter it. Rest assured that your password is there... it is just
not being displayed. This is a Unix-ism.
- After you have successfully entered the Administrator's password and pressed return, the terminal will then provide you with the initial prompt. If you
have done everything correctly, your terminal window will look like this at this point:
Welcome to Darwin!
[johndoe's-Computer:~] johndoe% sudo nvram boot-args="cpus=1"
Password:
[johndoe's-Computer:~] johndoe%_
When you have reached this point, the modicfication has been completed. You must now quit Terminal and restart your computer. If you received an error
message at anytime like "Command not found", Try again. You may have mis-typed something.
- Whenever you wish to turn the 2nd processor back on, you with substitute "cpus=1" for "cpus=2". The command will look like this:
Welcome to Darwin!
[johndoe's-Computer:~] johndoe% sudo nvram boot-args="cpus=2"
Password:

Q: realMYST seems to run very choppy on my computer.
Why doesn't it run like Exile, or some of the other new games?
A: RealMyst, by design, is very different from most of today's computer
games. It combines the original Myst technology with current technology
to create the 3D environment. Comparing RealMyst to other current titles
(even Exile, which is a sequel) isn't truly fair. Naturally, as with
any computer game, the faster the processor and the more RAM you have,
the smoother the game will run.
Although the performance differences were notable between an older G3 machine, and a newer G4 machine, we felt that the game was still enjoyable at slower speeds. If you feel that RealMyst is running too slowly for you, try the following to help increase the framerate of the game. When opening the RealMyst application, you are presented with an options dialogue (you may have disabled this feature from coming up automatically... if you did, hold down the "Option" key while you double-click the icon). Change the following:
- Move slider to "Speed"
- Change color depth to "Thousands of Colors"
- Set resolution to "640 X 480"
